2010 Sees a Slow Start for Hail

A quick comparison of statistics from NOAA makes it obvious that 2010 is off to a slow start for hail.  While there have been a few storms so far this year, it’s easy to see from the data below why hail chasers across the nation may well be getting antsy!

To date this year (March 24, 2010), 257 total large hail (1″ or larger) events have been reported by NOAA.  When we compare this figure to figures from the end of March in the four previous years, we find a stark difference as follows:

January 1-March 24, 2010:      257
January 1-March 31, 2009:  1,019
January 1-March 31, 2008:  1,834
January 1-March 31, 2007:  1,335
January 1-March 31, 2006:  1,998

The previous four years average at 1,547, putting today’s year-to-date figure of 257 considerably behind, even though there is still one week left until the end of the month.  (Source: http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/online/monthly/newm.html)
